In the "Finger Lakes" region of upstate New York lies a little piece of heaven on earth. It is home to hundreds of farm animals who have been delivered from neglect and abuse. They have been rescued from the hell of factory farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses.

At this wonderful, safe place, farm animals live full, exuberant lives. They live the way nature intended--basking in the sun, grazing in pastures. Here farm animals are allowed to be the social, sentient beings they were created to be.

We recently stayed overnight at this wonderful place. Approximately 8 miles west of Watkin's Glen, NY, this little piece of heaven is officially known as Farm Sanctuary. The farm offers visitors overnight accommodations in cabins and offers a vegan continental breakfast in the morning.

On our arrival, we were welcomed by a friendly, helpful staff, who made us feel at home on the farm. Even Lexy, our 4-year-old Sheltie, was welcomed and treated as an important guest.
Between the hours of 7 AM and 5 PM, visitors were welcome to walk around the 175-acre animal shelter area. Tours were offered at various times throughout the day, providing education and an opportunity to actually admire, touch and be with the animals to enjoy their company.

We were greeted by friendly goats, surrounded by turkeys, and spent time petting and talking to Snickers and Larry, two very contented cows.

Farm Sanctuary is a national, non-profit organization. Since 1986 they have worked to end cruelty to farm animals through rescue, education and advocacy. The task of changing the way society views and treats farm animals is enormous. Farm Sanctuary is working diligently to do just that.
We at Not-Just-Recipes are grateful to the entire Farm Sanctuary organization for the contribution they are making to ensure a brighter future for not-just-animals, but for all creatures and our planet.
