Frozen Tofu
by: Bobby (old female)

You certainly can freeze it. I've been doing that for many, many years. And with no problems or hassel. I just bring it home and toss it in the freezer in the original package. It really changes the texture into being a solid instead of the mush. Then I crumble, slice, etc. it; after adding a flavorful sauce I can use it in any dish as a meat substitute . I've been a vegetarian for over 45 years and still living (and "they" say, looking) like a middle ager at age 87.

Hi Wayne,

Thanks for asking. In fact, you can freeze tofu.
We haven't been able to find any definitive studies to say that you shouldn't or that it will in any way change the nutrient value of the tofu.

We have done it ourselves for specific recipes.
Here's why.

We like to make a "faux tuna" or a bar-b-que sandwich on occasion. We use tofu for these. It seems that when you freeze it tofu changes in consistency a little bit. Once it's thawed again it seems to have a firmer "feel" and it actually has a more "meaty" texture. There are actually striations that seem give it the look and "mouth feel" that the other stuff (meat) produces.

So, until we find otherwise, we will continue this method on occasion for certain recipes. Now, I certainly wouldn't want to eat frozen tofu all the time or to freeze it as a matter of routine but, here's how we do it.

We use extra firm tofu. We take what we think we'll need for the recipe out of the container and refrigerate the rest for use in something else.

Press as much water out of the tofu as possible. Then cut it into either little chunks or longer, thin strips. Place it in a small freezer bag and freeze it. Simple remove it from the freezer about an hour or two before you are ready to use it. That's all there is to it. Good luck!
