i don't want to make the change to vegetarianism gradually...

by Mary
(San José, Costa Rica)

... because i know i'll say "only this time" several times and i really really don't want to bail on this. i've thought about becoming vegetarian for some years now but never actually had the guts to really do it.
Now i finally took the decision and i don't want tempations.

so my question is, is it really bad to quit to all of the types of meat at once? even if i eat meat substitutes and protein shakes etc?
is there any major health issue?

thank you.

You don't need to go gradual!
by: Rich from NJR

Hi Mary,

Thanks for dropping us a note. Let me first start by saying congratulations on your decision to become vegetarian! You will be thankful you did.

There are no real hard and fast rules about making the change gradually or all at once. It varies for a lot of people. It often depends on how strong you believe your will power to be. From your note it sounds as though you think you might be easily tempted to eat non-veg again, even if temporarily. I think a lot of people feel that way. I did. But it's ok. You need to do it in your own way and your own time.

With that said I will say that there are certainly no ill effects from one day having your last taste of meat and then never having it again. It will be more of a mental challenge to be sure! As long as you eat a good balance in your vegetarian diet though, you will get all of the nutrition your body needs. If you would feel better making the change by jumping in with both feet all at once then good for you. It won't hurt to do that but do try to balance what you eat. By that I mean, lots of greens both light and dark, beans for protein and fiber as well. Try to go with whole wheat pastas when you eat pasta. Eat fruit and nuts.

Try different things if you are unsure - ever have quinoa? I hadn't until I became a veg-head. It is different and so versatile. Now I really love it.

One of the best things to help would be to download and print the vegetarian starter kit we offer. It's FREE! The link is in the navigation bar to the left on most pages of this site. It is loaded with great information to get you started off right. There are a lot of great recipes too.

Good luck with this healthy change in your life. You can do it! Stay in touch with us and let us know how it's going.

We wish you a healthy and happy future!

Rich
