Non-fat dairy products on a vegan "diet" for type 2 diabetes & cholesterol?

What's wrong with eating non-fat dairy products (Smart Balance, non-fat yogurt) if you're following a vegan lifestyle for type 2 diabetes & cholesterol?

Vegan Diet and dairy
by: Editor @ NJR

Thanks for your question Mary. From the sound of the question I would assume that it refers to a question of being on a "vegan" diet strictly for health reasons and not for any ethical reasons. That's fair. A vegan diet has proven to be an excellent way to correct or at least control and arrest many symptoms for numerous elements of disease.

First however, just to clarify - I would say that if you're consuming dairy - even non-fat dairy - that you are not really on a vegan diet. It is more like a modified vegetarian (lacto-vegetarian) diet.

A vegan diet indicates the consumption of no animal products. Dairy products are typically high in fat, particularly saturated fat. Nonfat versions are typically high in sugar (lactose). Nonfat milk, for example, is about 55 percent sugar, as a percentage of calories.

So, in our opinion, you still open yourself up to the harmful effects of dairy, even if its fat free, making it more difficult to achieve your goal of controlling diabetes. Please visit
