Vegetarian Diet Plan

What is a vegetarian diet plan? Does it work? How "healthy" is it? These are all good questions. The fact is that there are many vegetarian diet plans in use today. Some are good and some may not be so good. We at NJR do not necessarily recommend any particular diet plan. That said, what we do recommend and believe is that it is imperative that before you take on any diet regimen you consult with your doctor, a registered dietician or other health care professional.

It is also worthy to note that a meatless diet is not necessarily or automatically a less fatty diet. There are a lot of vegetables and nuts and other non-meat products that contain a significant amount of fat. And of course, there is the whole carbohydrate dilemma. Many vegetarians eat a lot of pasta and other carb loaded foods which can actually cause weight gain.

And, if you happen to be a sugar addict (voice of experience here) you can tack on the pounds even though your main meals are considered healthy, vegetarian meals. But typically, those who abide by a regular, balanced vegetarian or vegan diet carry about 15% less body fat than the average person. Of course, don't forget to include exercise in your diet plan! Exercise is second only to eating a healthy vegetarian diet in our opinion.

Making certain that you get enough of the daily recommended vitamins and minerals as well as protein can be a challenge but if you are eating a balanced vegetarian diet this is not a super difficult thing to achieve. It may be neccesary to supplement your diet with vitamins - another discussion to have with your physician or dietician.
